Compline

Regular Compline service (Night Prayer) returns to The Advent on announced Sundays at 9:00 p.m.
For this upcoming special service on Sunday, May 24, a group of singers will present the earliest polychoral setting of Compline, by Renaissance composer Francesco Santacroce, preceded by a lecture and reception.
Santacroce and his contemporaries, active in Padua, leave us the earliest securely dateable works written for more than one choir. This Compline may in fact be the earliest surviving polychoral work. Dated from around 1544, this inaugural Compline service at The Advent will be the first performance of Santacroce’s work since the 16th century.
Sam Bradley will offer a lecture about the piece and its musical context at 8:00 p.m. in the Library; the Compline service itself will take place at 9:00 p.m. in the chancel, lasting about half an hour.
